In the remake of the Manchurian Candidate, the all-evil USSR was replaced with the all-evil specter of a weapons manufacturing corporation (wooooh). Both movies capitalize on popular fears that government is not legitimate; that it was manipulated into existence by stealth forces, and is acting in their interests that are incongruent with those of the citizenry.
In the run up to the elections, Obama was often portrayed as a Manchurian Candidate of Muslims, Blacks (so un-America, you know), socialists, liberals, etc. Here is a reminder:
Barack Obama was programmed for years by his atheist, Muslim father, (which is it – atheist or Muslim?, IH), by the communist sex pervert Frank Marshall Davis, by con man Tony Rezko, by domestic terrorist Bill Ayers and others - most of all by black liberation theology screamer Jeremiah Wright... There is a total blackout on his college years. His campaign obscures what he did as a "community organizer."... - all have been laundered through the magic of public relations into the near-sacred saga of "The One" who has been sent to serve, and to save, America.

Even recently Kevin Hassett in Bloomberg News suggested that Obama's policies, aimed to quell and reverse the economic disaster he inherited, were those of an enemy of the US, resolved on destroying the US by ruining its economy (Kevin Hassett, 'Manchurian Candidate' Starts War on Business, March 9, 2009, Bloomber News).
With the extreme hyperbole the past few weeks over health care reform it is easy to miss the fact that Obama is not only not EVEN SLIGHTLY a socialist, left-wing, black liberation Muslim, atheist radical. In fact, he seems to be serving the interests of the very same forces who are accusing him of all this crap. Let's review:
1.Wars: The forces taken out of Iraq have just been redeployed to Afghanistan to fight yet another pointless, goal-less, destructive war. Moreover, reports indicate that there are more employees of private contractors in Afghanistan than US troops, suggesting that the war is simply a boondoggle, raking billions of tax payer dollars into the pockets of the likes of Haliburtan, Xe (AKA Blackwater), and others.
2.Foreign policy: No apparent change in the relationship with Iran or N Korea (although there maybe surprises). Complete impotence in stalling the expansion of settlement in the West Bank, alleviating the economic pressure on Gaza, in doing ANYTHING that will enable the reopening of fruitful (!) negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian leadership.
3.Economy: While foreclosure and unemployment numbers continue to rise, the large corporate forces that brought the economy to its knees are now bringing in record profits. Wall Street is bouncing back, executives are getting they obscene bonuses. Plus sa change, tout la meme chose.
4.Health care – last but not least: I am hoping for the best, but between the talk of triggers and co-ops, and backroom deals with pharmaceuticals companies, I am not holding my breath. And the next time the opportunity arises for health care reform, I will probably be on Medicare myself (if there's anything left).
Don't get me wrong. I don't truly believe that Obama is acting out of nefarious interests, or he was secretly brainwashed by Bill Kristol, and John Podhoretz. He is simply weak.
He is the most popular president since Bill Clinton (except for George. W. immediately after 9/11), he has a majority in the House and Senate, and is trying to introduce a reform that polls show that at least 70% of Americans support.
